Battery Storage
Benefits of installing battery storage
- Battery storage allows you to store the additional electricity generated by your renewable energy system.
- You can use this stored energy during periods of higher usage.
- You can reduce your energy bills, by drawing on the stored energy during peak tariff periods.
- If you don’t need to use the additional energy stored in your battery, you can sell it back to the grid.
Solar panels generate energy when there’s daylight, by storing the excess electricity in a battery, you can use this solar generated electricity when there’s no sun, or at night, instead of buying it from the grid. If you don’t install a battery with your renewable energy solution, you’ll switch back to using energy from the national grid.
Considerations when installing battery storage
Type of battery
We provide lithium ion batteries which are also used in consumer electronics. They’re lighter, smaller and longer lasting than lead acid batteries. They have a high energy density (kWh/kg), so can store more electricity for their size, and can discharge a larger amount of power at any one time.
Size of battery
The battery that you install in your property needs to cover your evening and night-time electricity usage, so it will be ready to be charged up again when the sun comes up. The size of the battery also depends on the energy the solar panels can generate.
Charge/discharge rate
This is the power input and output in kW. Make sure that you have enough power output from your battery to run the appliances you use. If you can’t access enough stored battery power when you need it you’ll need to supplement your supply with grid electricity.
Power cuts
Some batteries do not provide backup if there is a power cut. If this is this essential for you, it may require some rewiring, and you may need a larger storage capacity to accommodate that reserve.
Location
We recommend locating your battery storage unit in a cool, well-ventilated area.
Warranty
Our batteries come with industry leading warranties, typically this means that they guarantee 70% minimum capacity after 10 years.
